MIT MB3-001 / MB3-002 Break Cue
Professional Maple Break Cue with 13.8 mm G10 Tip, G10 Ferrule, Stainless Steel 3/8×10 Joint, and Linen Wrap
The MIT MB3-001 / MB3-002 Break Cue is a dedicated professional breaking cue developed by MIT Cues for players who require powerful energy transfer, stable cue delivery, and dependable construction during the opening break.
Unlike a standard playing cue, the MIT MB3 Series is engineered specifically to withstand the higher impact forces generated during competitive break shots. Its configuration combines a stiff Maple Break Shaft, an oversized 13.8 mm G10 Tip, a durable G10 Ferrule, and a solid Stainless Steel 3/8×10 Joint.
Together, these components create a firm and efficient power-delivery system designed to reduce unnecessary energy loss between the player’s stroke and the cue ball.
The two models share the same performance-focused technical configuration. Their primary difference is the decorative wood used in the rear section:
- MB3-001: Regas Wood
- MB3-002: Tiger Wood
The MB3-001 presents a bold and modern natural-wood appearance, while the MB3-002 offers a warmer and more distinctive striped grain pattern. Both versions feature a practical Linen Wrap, giving players additional grip security during fast and powerful break strokes.
Designed for intermediate and advanced Pool players, the MIT MB3-001 / MB3-002 is suitable for competitive 8 Ball, 9 Ball, and 10 Ball. It is an excellent choice for players who want to separate their break equipment from their playing cue while maintaining the familiar feedback of a traditional Maple shaft.

Dedicated Break Cue Construction
The MIT MB3-001 / MB3-002 is designed specifically for breaking rather than normal positional play.
A break cue must manage significantly greater impact force than a standard playing cue. During a powerful break shot, the cue needs to provide:
- High structural stiffness
- Efficient energy transfer
- Strong front-end durability
- Stable shaft alignment
- Reliable cue ball contact
- Resistance to repeated impact
- Secure rear-hand control
- Consistent performance over time
The MB3 Series addresses these requirements through its Maple Break Shaft, G10 front-end components, Stainless Steel joint, and practical Linen Wrap.
Why Use a Dedicated Break Cue?
Using a dedicated break cue offers several important advantages compared with breaking using a regular playing cue.
Protects the Playing Cue
Repeated high-impact break shots may place additional stress on:
- Playing cue tips
- Ferrules
- Shafts
- Joint components
- Decorative cue finishes
A dedicated break cue helps preserve the condition and playing characteristics of the primary playing cue.
Provides More Efficient Power
A break cue generally uses:
- A harder tip
- A stiffer shaft
- A larger tip diameter
- Stronger ferrule material
- A more direct joint response
These features help transfer more of the stroke’s energy into the cue ball.
Improves Equipment Consistency
Separating the break cue from the playing cue allows the player to maintain:
- A specialized break setup
- A softer playing tip for cue ball control
- A harder break tip for power
- More predictable equipment response
- Reduced wear on the primary cue
For frequent league and tournament players, this equipment separation can provide both performance and maintenance benefits.
Selected Maple Break Shaft
The MIT MB3 Series uses a dedicated Maple Break Shaft.
Maple remains one of the most widely respected materials in cue manufacturing because it provides a strong balance of stiffness, durability, responsiveness, and natural playing feedback.
For a break cue, the shaft is selected and configured to support:
- Firm cue delivery
- Efficient forward acceleration
- Stable cue ball contact
- Reliable energy transmission
- Natural wood feedback
- Strong resistance to repeated impact
The Maple shaft allows the player to retain a traditional cue sensation while benefiting from a more powerful break-specific front end.
Natural Maple Feedback
Many players prefer Maple because it provides a recognizable and direct impact sensation.
Potential benefits include:
- Clear cue ball feedback
- Familiar vibration
- Natural flex characteristics
- Smooth bridge-hand movement
- Traditional cue response
- Easy adaptation for experienced players
The Maple Break Shaft may feel more organic than a carbon fiber alternative, making it suitable for players who want power without losing the familiar sensation of natural wood.
Shaft Stiffness and Break Performance
A break shaft generally needs greater stiffness than a shaft designed primarily for finesse and spin control.
Increased stiffness may help provide:
- Faster energy transfer
- Reduced unnecessary shaft flex
- Stable cue ball delivery
- Stronger forward momentum
- More predictable impact
- Better control during powerful strokes
The MIT Maple Break Shaft is designed to support strong acceleration while maintaining sufficient feedback for accurate cue ball contact.
13.8 mm Tip Diameter
The MIT MB3-001 / MB3-002 uses a large 13.8 mm tip diameter.
This fuller front-end profile is well suited to break-cue performance.
Potential benefits include:
- Stable cue ball contact
- Increased confidence at address
- Strong forward energy transfer
- Reduced sensitivity to minor alignment errors
- Substantial bridge-hand feel
- Firm impact response
The larger diameter also complements the hard G10 material and the overall power-focused design.
Benefits of a Larger Break Tip
Compared with smaller playing-cue tips, a 13.8 mm break tip may provide:
- A fuller visual contact area
- Stronger straight-line delivery
- Greater front-end stability
- More substantial impact sensation
- Improved confidence during high-speed strokes
However, proper technique remains essential. A larger tip does not automatically create a stronger break without accurate cue ball contact and controlled body movement.
G10 Tip
The MIT MB3 Series is equipped with an extra-hard G10 Tip.
G10 is a high-strength composite material known for its rigidity, impact resistance, and durability. It is commonly used in break and jump cue applications where maximum energy transfer is more important than the soft touch required for normal positional play.
Key Benefits
- Extremely firm impact response
- Efficient energy transmission
- Strong resistance to compression
- Excellent durability
- Stable shape retention
- Reduced energy absorption
- Suitable for repeated break shots
The G10 Tip is designed to transfer stroke energy directly into the cue ball with minimal cushioning.
Maximum Energy Transfer
A soft playing tip compresses at impact, helping grip the cue ball and create spin. A hard G10 break tip compresses significantly less.
This reduced compression may provide:
- Faster energy transfer
- More immediate cue ball acceleration
- Stronger rack impact
- Reduced loss of forward momentum
- Firm and direct feedback
The result is a front end optimized for power rather than delicate cue ball control.
G10 Tip Durability
The G10 Tip is highly resistant to many forms of normal tip wear.
Potential benefits include:
- Strong shape retention
- Reduced mushrooming
- Resistance to heavy compression
- Long service life
- Reliable repeated performance
- Lower frequency of tip replacement
Because the material is extremely hard, tip installation and servicing should be completed by a qualified cue technician familiar with G10 components.
G10 Tip Playing Characteristics
Players can expect a very firm and immediate impact sensation.
Typical characteristics include:
- Hard contact feedback
- Strong cue ball acceleration
- Limited cushioning
- Efficient power transmission
- Reduced suitability for finesse play
- High durability
The G10 Tip is intended for breaking and should not be expected to perform like a soft or medium leather playing tip.
G10 Ferrule
The cue also uses a durable G10 Ferrule.
The ferrule supports the tip and helps manage the strong impact forces generated during the break.
Key Benefits
- High impact resistance
- Strong structural rigidity
- Excellent front-end durability
- Stable tip support
- Efficient energy transmission
- Reduced risk of compression
- Compatibility with powerful strokes
Using G10 for both the tip and ferrule creates a highly rigid front-end assembly.
Tip and Ferrule Integration
The G10 Tip and G10 Ferrule work together as a dedicated power-transfer system.
This combination helps provide:
- Minimal energy absorption
- Firm cue ball contact
- Stable impact alignment
- Strong resistance to damage
- Consistent break response
- Reliable performance under repeated use
The integrated hard front end is one of the defining technical features of the MIT MB3 Series.
Stainless Steel 3/8×10 Joint
The MIT MB3-001 / MB3-002 uses a Stainless Steel 3/8×10 Joint Pin.
The 3/8×10 joint is known for its deep threaded engagement and secure mechanical connection.
Key Benefits
- Strong shaft-to-butt connection
- Accurate alignment
- Stable energy transmission
- Firm impact feedback
- High mechanical durability
- Reliable long-term use

The Stainless Steel construction provides strength and resistance to wear.
Deep Threaded Connection
The 3/8×10 pin uses a substantial thread profile that creates a secure connection between the shaft and butt.
Potential advantages include:
- Reduced joint movement
- Firm cue assembly
- Stable rotational alignment
- Consistent rear-hand response
- Strong power transfer
- Reliable performance during high-impact breaks
The joint is designed to make the cue feel structurally unified during the stroke.
Firm Joint Feedback
The Stainless Steel joint contributes to a solid and direct playing sensation.
Players may experience:
- Clear impact response
- Strong shaft-to-butt connection
- Reduced energy loss
- Stable cue acceleration
- Substantial rear-hand feedback
- Consistent break delivery
The exact feel will depend on total cue weight, shaft condition, grip pressure, and break technique.
Linen Wrap
Both MB3-001 and MB3-002 feature a practical Linen Wrap.
Linen has been widely used on Pool cues because it provides a comfortable balance of texture, grip movement, moisture management, and traditional appearance.
Key Benefits
- Improved rear-hand traction
- Reduced slipping during powerful strokes
- Comfortable grip texture
- Moderate moisture absorption
- Traditional cue appearance
- Stable hand positioning
- Suitable for extended playing sessions
The Linen Wrap is especially useful during break shots, where the player may accelerate the cue more aggressively.
Grip Security During the Break
A break stroke may generate more rear-hand movement than a normal playing stroke.
The Linen Wrap helps provide:
- More secure grip contact
- Better control during acceleration
- Reduced unwanted hand movement
- Increased confidence in humid conditions
- Stable cue delivery
- Improved control of the follow-through
Players should still avoid gripping excessively tightly, as excessive tension can reduce stroke speed and accuracy.
